Days One and Two, which make up the first official round of the International Pool Tour North American Open, are now in the history books
The historic $2,000,000+ tournament with its unprecedented first place prize of $350,000 has seen great play, controversy, and difficulties overcoming the grueling tournament format and tough playing conditions. Here is a slight recap of the goings on at the tournament. For full coverage, visit www.internationalpooltour.com. There you can follow all the action including scoring, pictures, stories, and more. The IPT has sent home 80 of the original 200 players who showed up for its North American 8-Ball Open Championship, with only 120 returning for Tuesday's matches. Monday began with 100 of the world's finest players, but 40 were eliminated through the grueling round-robin, race-to-8 format. With five rounds throughout the day, players had to play four matches to determine whether or not they would advance. Every player in the tournament so far has played a minimum of eight hours on their day of play; many players played ten or more hours. At the beginning of day one, everyone was smiling and having a great time. By the end of day two, there was happiness on the faces of many, and devastation facing the 80 who have been eliminated from the tournament, including some favorites to do very well and maybe even win the tournament. To see a list of the players who are still playing, and those who have been eliminated, click here! The equipment is generating plenty of controversy, with many American players disparaging the custom cloth and the European and snooker players thankful for it. However, the most common complaint so far is the general inability of the players to pocket balls on the break. Players like Corey Deuel, Johnny Archer, Jimmy White, Shannon Daulton-all known for their excellent breaking abilities-have all made comments to the effect that they are encountering severe difficulties with their breaks. The IPT tables made by Diamond have the tightest possible pockets, in order to meet IPT code. The pockets are cut to 4 1/2 inches. However, taking into consideration the thickness of the cloth, the corner pockets are really 4 1/4" - 4 3/8" which make pocketing balls very challenging. The IPT has purposely made the playing conditions so difficult so that only the best players can win. However, being the best in this tournament format requires not only precision skills at billiards, it also requires mental and physical tenacity. The slow nap cloth made by Gorina has proven to be a challenge to American players who don't have much experience playing on this sort of cloth. Many players have tried rolling the ball on safety shots and never reaching a rail. More fouls have been called at this tournament for this very reason than at any other tournament explained one of the official referees. Players do however like the Sardo M-5000 Tight Rack because it eliminates any potential problems caused by a bad rack. Using the M-5000 guarantees a consistent rack every time. To learn about official IPT equipment, click here. One major story line is how the ladies will fare at on the IPT. So far, the ladies seemed to have trouble keeping up with the rest of the pack, with the exception of Allison Fisher and Sarah Ellerby-both Brits-will advance to Tuesday's play. Loree Jon Jones also played well and advanced to the second round with two wins and two losses. Former World Champion Gerda Hofstatter slid into round two in a three way tie for third place in her bracket. She was tied in wins with Jim Weast and Hall of Famer Ed Kelly. However, Gerda had the best winning percentage and prevailed by only a 1.1% margin over Weast. Many women never won a single match. The Hall of Famers exhibited similar troubles remaining competitive today. Earl Strickland, Efren Reyes, and Mike Sigel had no worries, but the majority of the HOF members held less than a 50% games-won average. Needless to say, when exhaustion sets in with the players, tempers flare, and controversy enter the game. There were a few disputes during Round 1. David Alcaide, who was one of the IPT qualification event winners in Veert, The Netherlands, was found to be using a phenolic tip on his break cue. He was penalized one game by the referee and not allowed to use the cue again. Also, in the match between Grady Mathews and Jeff Abernathy, both players were warned for their unsportsman-like conduct. At one point in the match, a referee made a call that Mathews found questionable, causing "The Professor" to go off the air, resulting in a penalty against him dished out by the referee. In his match against Philip Harrison of the U.K., Mike Sigel complained to the referee that Harrison had taken a bathroom break without his express permission. The referee penalized Harrison a game; however, the game was reinstated by Charles Ursitti when Harrison's corner man explained to him that Sigel had never said Harrison was not allowed to take a break. The rule is clear that if a player wants to take a break, he must do so on his inning, or have permission from the opponent. Harrison told Sigel that he needed to go to the bathroom. Sigel said nothing and Harrison took that as acknowledgement of his request. Sigel tried to make a big deal out of it, but by not saying no, it was construed as giving him permission to do so. To read the rules, click here. Some of these disputes were caught by IPT photographers and are in the photo gallery, click here to see them. This recap barely scratched the surface of all that went on. Visit www.internationalpooltour.com for the whole story, including in depth stories, photos, statistics, and the list of players who advanced to Round 2. You will be surprised by many of the players who failed to advance. Matches start at 10am (Pacific). Every player tomorrow will play five straight matches. PR

(オンザヒル様より) IPT ANOUNCEMENT: Saturday July 22 The North American 8-Ball Open Championship INSIDE THE PLAYER’S MEETING The International Pool Tour’s first major event is poised to begin tomorrow, Sunday, July 23, at the Venetian in fabulous Las Vegas. Two hundred of the most talented pocket billiards players worldwide arrived at the beautiful Venetian Resort in Las Vegas, NV today to attend the official players meeting. The men, dressed in suits and ties, and the women in their best, took their first look at the grand scale of this historic tournament. Players will compete for their share of over $2,000,000 which is the highest prize purse in the history of billiards. By playing in the North American Open, each player is guaranteed at least $2,000. The winner will take home an unprecedented $350,000! Tour Director Deno Andrews is conspicuously missing from this event, as he and his wife are expecting their second child imminently. He was at the airport about to board his plane, which was two hours delayed, when his wife called to inform him that he should probably turn back. Deno said by phone that “I knew for the last ten years that I would run the largest tournament in the history of the game, but I guess I will have to wait for the World Open! As far as the North American Open, the tournament is in good hands with my assistant, Lindsay Erazo.” Lindsay Erazo, the Assistant Tour Director, has stepped up and will assume Andrews’ duties throughout this event, with Charles Ursitti assisting. Kevin Trudeau, the founder of the IPT, addressed the players at a meeting Saturday afternoon, in which he covered a wide range of topics, including reiterating that every 2007 tour member is guaranteed to earn $100,000. After the meeting, the tournament room was opened to the players, and every one of the 60 Diamond tables was taken in a matter of minutes. Many players stood in awe of the beautiful tournament arena. IPT Player Aaron Czetli said that “this is the greatest thing I have ever seen in pool, or anything for that matter.” 1995 World Champion Gerda Hofstatter stated “the tournament room is so beautiful, and I can’t wait to play my matches on Monday.” Half of the field will have matches on Sunday, while the other half will wait until Monday to play. At the end of Monday’s rounds, 80 players will be eliminated. There is no room for mistakes at the first major IPT tournament. The tournament format is brutal! The round-robin format requires players to play all day. On certain days, players must play four matches, and on other days they must play five. That means that every player will be playing for at least eight to ten hours daily as they advance through the brackets. Corey Deuel was asked about this demanding format to which he replied “you have to be in good physical shape or else you have no chance.” Two players have dropped out of the North American Open due to the physical demands of the tournament. Click here for more details. Tournament conditions are some of the toughest in the history of the sport. The Diamond IPT tables are manufactured to provide the tightest pockets in professional pool. At the widest part of the corner pockets, the opening is no bigger than 4 ½” which is much tighter than other professional events. The cloth is IPT Tournament Cloth, which is a custom slow-nap cloth made by Gorina, experts in textiles for over 100 years. The balls are a brand new custom designed ball made specifically for the IPT by SALUC, the Belgian ball company. Of course, to play in a tournament of this magnitude, the racks must be perfect every time, so the IPT uses the new Sardo M-5000 Tight Rack. IPT Tournament Chalk is also on the tables helping players to reduce the chances of miscuing. To learn more about official IPT equipment, please visit www.internationalpooltour.com. DON’T MISS A THING! The players aren’t the only ones with good shots. The IPT’s professional photographers bring you all the action at the online photo gallery. The IPT is providing unprecedented live on-line coverage of this event at www.internationalpooltour.com. There you will be able to follow the action by viewing up to the minute match scores, reading stories from the tournament floor and player interviews, follow player and tournament statistics. The coverage is ongoing during the event and promises to be the most in depth coverage of any billiards event ever. Of course, if you have access to Eurosport, you can catch daily live broadcasts in Prime Time.

IPT North American Open Update Breaking News The Chinese Government has rejected a travel visa for Liu Wei, so he has officially withdrawn from the IPT North American Open 8-Ball Championship. Wei was the winner of the qualification event held in Shanghai, China, just several weeks ago. Details about his VISA rejection are sketchy, but some points that were articulated from the Chinese Government stated that he has no significant ties to China in terms of wealth or marriage. Through his representative in China, Wei expressed sadness and disappointment in not being able to compete for China in this prestigious event. Wei's replacement is Lee Heuwagen, who was the second alternate on the waitlist to play in the North American Open. Heuwagen played in multiple IPT qualification tournaments. He was the second of only two players to place third in two North American Open qualifiers, a performance statistic that landed him in the number two spot on the alternate list. Heuwagen was called yesterday and told the news that he would be competing in the North American Open. He was very excited to hear the news, though he did state that he was disappointed for Liu Wei's unfortunate circumstance. The IPT North American Open 8-Ball Championship starts Sunday morning, July 23, 2006. Match times are 10am, 12:30pm, 3pm, 5:30pm, and 8pm (Pacific) daily. Fusco was very disappointed that he was not able to play in this event. He admitted that he "has practiced very hard for this event." Fusco plans to compete in the World Open. Fusco's replacement is Jeff Beckley, who was the third alternate on the waitlist to play in the North American Open. Beckley played in multiple IPT qualification tournaments. He had one third place finish in the NA Open qualification system, and played in four of the five weekends of the system. His high finish and multiple attempts placed him third on the alternate list and now on the tournament roster. Beckley was called just minutes ago and was told the news that he would be competing in the North American Open. His first reaction was "Are you kidding me?" He was very excited to hear the news. Beckley asked who he has replaced and expressed disappointment when he was told that it was Fusco.

On a telephone call, he reported that he was disappointed about not being able to play "in the biggest tournament of his life." Rempe hopes to be able to compete in the World Open, another major just six weeks away. Filling Rempe's spot in the tournament is Keith Bennett. Bennett has played in multiple IPT qualification events. In the North American Open Qualification System, Bennett took third place in two separate events; he was one of only two players to do so in those 25 events.

Official Player Groupings Announced
IPT(国際プールツアー)公式グループ分け決定 The IPT is proud to announce the player groupings for the IPT "North American Open 8-Ball Championship." The methodology for determining the groups was complex. All of the Hall of Fame members were placed in separate groups; female players were placed into separate groups; all of the players who qualified through the qualification tournament system were placed into separate groups (since there are 50 qualifiers and 40 groups, some groups have two qualified players); finally, a number of the top players, historically, were placed into separate groups. All of the placed players were placed randomly into their respective groups. Click here to view the official player groupings! Once the tournament starts, there is a predetermined format that dictates which players advance to which brackets in future rounds. The official tournament format will be announced shortly and will include the bracket population flow chart. International Pool Tour News and Updates:
part1 The first five tournaments of the IPT World Open 8-Ball Championship Qualification System get underway starting this Friday July 14, 2006. Entry to the first weekend events will be cut off some time on Thursday, July 13. Entry fees must be paid in advanced. Absolutely no entry fees will be accepted at the door regardless of the number of players. Players who entered the early rounds of the North American Open qualification system were rewarded because of the typically low turnout of players in the first round, so don't miss your chance! Click here to see full results of those qualification tournaments. The top two players in each qualification tournament will win a spot in the World Open. Players who place 3rd-6th in each qualification tournament will win a free entry into another qualification tournament. Over $3 million dollars in prize money will be given away at the World Open. First place in the World Open is an unprecedented $500,000! Interestingly, last place pays $5000...even if you don't make a single ball! Also, any non-IPT Tour member who places in the top six in the IPT World Open 8-Ball Championship will earn automatic invitations to play in the 2006 IPT Players Championship and IPT Masters Championship, which are Tour Member-only events. For the complete payout schedules, click here. Also keep in mind that this is the IPT "World Open 8-Ball Championship," and the fact that many more qualification tournaments will be held outside the U.S. This first week of qualification tournaments are being played in the U.S. If you plan to attend a qualifier in the U.S., after this weekend, there will not be that many opportunities. Click here to visit the qualifier schedule for the qualification tournaments. Don't miss this opportunity to play in the biggest and most prestigious tournament in the history of the game! You can register on line at www.internationalpooltour.com or by calling the IPT at (847) 439-3438 during business hours (CST). But remember, if you want to play this weekend, you need to register as soon as possible. There are two entry fee levels for qualification tournaments. A full entry fee is $1500. All winnings earned at this entry fee level will count towards the top 100 Money List which wins you a 2007 IPT Player's Card. All 2007 IPT players are guaranteed $100,000! For more information on how this is earned, click here. The second entry fee level is $750. If you enter a qualifying tournament at the $750 entry fee level and come in first or second, you still are entered into the IPT World Open 8-Ball Championship. However, you will only receive 50% of any prize money you win. Your prize money will not count towards the money list. This qualifying system is designed to allow players from all over the world to enter tournaments without huge travel expenses and costs. It is also designed to weed out players who know that they have no chance in the tournaments. Deno J.
